The Morning Coffee Ritual

Gulp!Every Monday through Friday I wake up at 6:30, 6:38, and again at 6:46, thanks to the snooze-button. I then trudge out of bed, get ready for work, and then head into the office.

Once at the office I take a few minutes to check my email, then I get up do what gets me through the day: I get coffee. The coffee where I work is awful, nay, terrible! I mean it is just plain disgusting. It has a decade-old cardboard taste that no amount of cream and sugar can cover. To make things worse, it costs a dollar!

But it ain’t the coffee that drives me. It is the snooze-button effect that the ritual has on my day. To get to the coffee I must walk down three long hallways and two flights of stairs. When I arrive at the cafeteria, I get to chat mindlessly with the same three people that get coffee at the same time I do. Mostly we talk about how bad the coffee is.

Once I’ve shelled out my dollar, I don’t walk - or even stroll - back to my desk: I mosey. And I don’t take even a single sip of my coffee until I get back to my desk. That way I don’t waste it. Once I am back at my desk, I take sips each time I need a little break. The feel of the coffee moving down my throat, and even the awful taste, brings an exquisite feeling of relaxation and well being.

And when I’m finished with the coffee? A bathroom break, of course.

What is your morning coffee ritual?

I’m also an advocate/user of the snooze button. My alarm goes off at 5:30 but I usually dont get up ’til 6am. Each time I hit the snooze means it’s one less thing I do. One snooze hit = no shaving, two snooze hit = no TV news, etc.

I never drank coffee until I had a kid. Now it’s a daily neccisity. If I’m lucky my wife will set up our coffee maker to brew me a cup of joe that I drink on the way to work. If not then I go to the Dunkin Donuts drive thru for my mornng brew.

Either way I sip my coffee as I smack the pre-sets on my XM radio around during my hour long commute. Coffee and XM make it bearable.

My coffee ritual is very similar to yours. The main purpose of course is delaying any real work. But at our office they serve Starbucks coffee. What would we do without coffee? I hate coffee.

I put off drinking anything caffeinated as long as possible. When I can’t take it anymore, I chug a Red Bull and get back to work. I’m not a terribly social person. I just dive in and get it done.

My coffee ritual consists of sleeping until 10:00 every morning. All that is going to change once I graduate and have to get a real job, though…

LOL! I love Red Bull, but it’s too expensive. Then again, so is the coffee I drink.

Snooze is a regular feature in our household. When my husband finally decides to roll out of bed, he goes straight to the kitchen to get our coffee going. If he’s lucky, I’ll have washed the carafe out the night before, and emptied the basket. He will then shower, and we’ll enjoy our cups of coffee together once he’s done. But what’s special is the type of coffee. We live in Texas, and our grocery store chain (HEB) carries its own line of coffees, named after different cities or regions of Texas. We’ve been addicted to the Taste of Houston, which has real coconut flakes grinded into the coffee - it’s fabulous.
