A couple of years ago, the City of Atlanta decided to launch an advertising campaign. Coined Brand Atlanta, its goal was to promote tourism, promote local pride, and establish an identity for the city. The rationale for starting the promotional campaign was that when people think of Las Vegas they think “gambling,” and when people think of New Orleans they think “Katrina”, er “Mardi Gras”, but nothing comes to mind when people think of Atlanta.
Now don’t get me wrong. I love Atlanta and enjoy living here, but there isn’t anything about the city that gives it an identity. Sure we’ve got the world’s busiest airport and the headquarters of Coca-Cola, but who really cares about that? Now that’s not to say that there’s nothing to see in Atlanta, but nobody is going to visit Atlanta so that they can snap some pictures of the airport.
Anyway, the Brand Atlanta campaign has come up with a few gimmicks to promote the city. These include TV and radio commercials, billboard ads, and a contrived and very lame theme song. I encountered one of these promos while at the Atlanta airport. It was large banner hanging from the ceiling at the train station. I’m trying to figure out what message Atlanta is trying to send. That all men in Atlanta wear skirts?
I also live in Atlanta. One must do something interesting and noteworthy to have an identity..New Orleans has tradition and culture, Atlanta not so much. Atlanta: “The city that held the Olympics, once.” Doesn’t quite seem catchy..
Hmmmmm… Didn’t they just ban karaoke in bars that sell alcoholic beverages? Seems like they’d either be weirdly strict all around or tolerant- not somewhere in the middle. Maybe they’re tolerant and weirdly strict at the same time, just on different issues. I dunno. I don’t live there.

Men can also wear skirts proudly in Scotland of course, even Mel Gibson wore one for a movie and no-one thought he was a cross dresser or homosexual. Actually… Native Atlantans knows all about the city and if you live here, you take it for granted. Yeah, there’s not a whole lot of cultural stuff about Atlanta if you remove Martin Luther King Center and Stone Mountain (with the largest granite carving on the face of it depicting Civil War leaders). Forget Ted Turner, the home of Hanna Barbera, Hank Aaron, Worldwide headquarters of Coke, the world’s busiest airport, America’s tallest hotel, the tallest hotel lobby, Olympic park, the Margaret Mitchell house, the world’s Largest Aquarium, the place where Chick-Fil-A and Waffle house started it all and everything else that is Atlanta… they are all random things not combined into any one category like, for example, entertainment, media or history. Atlanta is a place where a bunch of stuff was just started, happens to be or ended up. There is nothing that can define Atlanta in one word or phrase like you could with L.A., New York, Chicago, etc. People just flood Atlanta to see all the random stuff but unless you can categorize everything together under one topic or make a song about it (not that stupid “ATL, put your hands up song”), there is nothing to really promote. You can’t exactly say… Atlanta, a place with a bunch of stuff to see or Atlanta, betcha didn’t know this was here.

Actually I was very close to be visit Atlanta because it had Olympic Games so I had good emotional link. At the end lost with Boston but I think that the rule is true here too:

I grew up in southern California and New Mexcio and have also lived in Chicago as an adult. I have lived in Atlanta for 10 years and can guarantee all that it is very much a city with an identitiy. Atlanta has great neighborhoods, with lovely houses, many of them restored from former glory. People care about their neighborhoods here. Atlanta has Piedmont Park, which during springtime is about the most beautiful place you can be, and there are many restaurants and bars surrounding the park; it is a very social place. ATL also has some great clubs that have been around awhile and never been gentrified check out Star Bar(in L5P) on Tusdays, Clairmont Lounge on Sat and MJQ any night of the week. Anyone who says ATL has nothing to offer doesn’t know the city beyond the coca cola, Olympics, CNN hype SO diss if u like but u have to look beyond the surface to understand our love for the city
