Lately I have been reading about an interesting little plant called salvia divinorum. This plant has been cultivated for centuries in Mexico and is somewhat popular in the recreational drug community, it is relatively unknown to society at large. It’s also 100% legal in most US states. So far.
By chewing or smoking the leaves, one can experience effects that may be best described as LSD-like. However, only about 18% of users actually describe it this way. The effects of salvia seem to be much more intense. The effects also seem to be unpleasant to a high number of users. Perhaps the experience was overwhelming to them. At higher doses, the effects may arrive immediately, but usually completely wear off in about an hour. Compare this to LSD where its effects can last up to 10 hours.
After reading about the plant and the myriad of stories written by those who have used it, I think that I may be ready to give it a try. However, my wife isn’t so keen on the idea. Maybe one day she’ll warm up to it. Until then, here’s hoping I’ll get to give it a try before our meddling politicians ban it.
While doing some reading about salvia before I began writing this article, I came across another interesting bit of information. Apparently, nutmeg is a mild to medium hallucinogen. In doses between 5 and 20 grams it can produce visual distortions and a mild euphoria. Doses above 30 grams may result in nutmeg poisoning, which causes thought disorder, a feeling of impending death, and a trip to the hospital. Now before you go raiding your mom’s spice rack, you should be warned that nutmeg isn’t popular as a recreational drug because it tastes terrible and has numerous possible negative side effects. It should also be noted that its effects don’t reach their peak for about 5 hours and can last up to three days. Check out some positive and negative nutmeg experiences here.

ive tried salvia d., which grows wild in alberta, canada. Its a mint, surprisingly. I smoked it, through a hookah, and found that you really need to smoke a large amount in quite short order to get a so-called ‘attack dose’. It was indeed an intense and short acting experience, sort of a quick touch of bizarre alien abstractness before my brain recoiled and i found myself back in the physical. Definitely disorientating. There was little time to really come to terms with the experience before it had passed. I havent repeated the experience, preferring to stick to mushrooms, which i find a pleasing balance between the 10 hour long haul of lsd, and the 10sec strangeness of salvia. But i certainly wont claim any spiritual, mental or physical repercussions that would lead me to ward anyone away from it. Definitely an experience. Good luck…
…lo.
you should try salvia, good reason to leave the armchair. it’s safe and it wears off quickly so it’s not the huge commitment lsd is (like you mentioned above, that’s a big deal). do it at home, put on your favorite music, unplug your phone, don’t plan anything for a while, and just enjoy the experience. it’s intense, if you like putting your body on rollercoasters you’ll love putting your brain on one.
If you are considering trying a drug - I would definitely recommend marijuana. The effects are not that intense and I, in fact, find them to be rather pleasant. I was always very much against marijuana use and actually wanted to disown my father at the age of 18 when I found out he had been smoking it my whole life. I was so black and white. But I gradually learned to open my mind and realized that just because something is illegal, does not actually make it bad - when used responsibly.
I too am slightly paranoid and at times a little anxious when I don’t have the proper outlets in my life. I have found that marijuana offers a much better feeling than alcohol. The first time I did try it - my boyfriend was surprised that I didn’t “freak out” or get extra paranoid because apparenlty this was super good stuff. So I don’t believe it has much to do with sober personality paranoia. From what I know of you through JBT, you should be fine.
I used to drink a lot. I like to blame it on a past boyfriend but I choose how much I drank. Now I just don’t see the point. I smoke less than I used to drink and if I didn’t actually like the taste of some good beer and attempting to get into wine, I probably wouldn’t drink at all. The effect is better from marijuana and there are no lingering negative side effects….except some weight gain due to the munchies
I have been interested, more recently, in trying something else - such as ’shrooms. But I have yet to decide if that’s really something I want to commit to. Marijuanna, if you have too much, you’ll just get sleepy and go to sleep - not too bad of a deal. ‘Shrooms - I would hate to have a “bad trip” and be stuck in it for hours.
On that note…I need to find a lighter…
Yo, your fears are unwarranted and the opposite of what they should be. Be way more afraid of illness and a negative reaction to salvia divinorum than marijuana or LSD. Salvia can make you feel really awful and paranoid and physically ill in the stomach. It’s not worth doing.
Marijuana, esp. for the first timer, is a hell of an experience. You should, by all account, thoroughly enjoy it, especially if you have the anticipation for it. Sometimes it’s not good for the first timer to smoke the crazy, dank gnarley purple haze stuff that is so prevalent now.
LSD, on the other hand, is something that is going to put you face to face with yourself real quick. It’s not recreational as much as spiritual. In my strong and experienced opinion, it is almost utterly necessary to take it with someone who has done it before and certainly not by yourself for the first time.
The illegality of these things is not to protect the users from the drug but rather an elaborate and unfortunate scheme by the powerful to keep people in fear. I see it’s worked on you a little bit!
You’re better off with LSD. Though Salvia Divinorum is legal and doesn’t last long, you don’t take quite as much away from the experience simply because you can’t really remember it. It is also a good idea to have a sober babysitter watch you because at certain doses, you completely lose your grip on reality and may roam around and possibly hurt yourself.
Though it can be forgiven, it’s quite irresponsible mentioning nutmeg as an intoxicant, as the intoxicating dose is dangerously close to the toxic dose. It also does not yield a proper trip.
If it is a hallucinogenic experience you want, and legality you’re concerned about, I would suggest mescaline. Mescaline comes mostly from the “Peyote” plant, which are hard to find, possibly endangered, and illegal. The San Pedro cactus is a far bigger plant, but also yields mescaline, and is perfectly legal(you may have one in a pot at home). The method of consuming mescaline varies, but my favorite recipe is linked at the bottom.
There are many species of cactus, so it is best to purchase from a nursery to be sure you get genuine Trichocereus Pachanoi(Ebay link at bottom). Taking this route will yield you a genuine, natural, organic, peaceful trip. Feel free to email me for any other questions, Fraudwasteabuse.
Couldn’t get links to work, just email me if you’re interested.
Nutmeg is a bad choice.
The difference between a dose that will get you high and a toxic dose
is slim, and even the former will increase your heart rate to the point that you’re likely to feel overheated and anxious, while experiencing disturbing hallucinations(sp?) that are only going to increase the discomfort.
I have experienced this firsthand, spoken to three other people who, from firsthand experience, have reported the same, and seen one person hospitalized for overdose.
Given the hypocrisy of governments, the US government’s CIA branch used LSD as a truth serum in the 50s and 60s for example, it is not moral in my view to live your life based on the “fear” of being caught; especially by hypocrites. In saying that though I don’t believe that taking drugs is moral. But, doing the right thing for the wrong reasons, especially fear, is not cool; this is another point that governments don’t get. I think the best reason to not take drugs for you is because your wife doesn’t want you to and you respect that.
As an aside I used to take drugs in my youth. You hit the nail on the head when you said, “Perhaps the experience was overwhelming to them”. This was part of the reason for my quitting; the line between feeling good and fearing for your life is easily crossed. The main reason though was that after a big weekend on alcohol and multiple drugs, pot and LSD, I noticed that my mental state was disrupted for days after the event. I though nothing of it but the next time I smoked pot heavily I noticed it again with the technical work I was doing. I never smoked again because I am a deep thinker and I depend on my intellect to stay sane a lot more than others I think. The scary thing is I had been smoking pot for 3 years and was too dumb to notice my IQ dropping after every session
Please do some research before posting such posts. Salvia Divinorum is NOTHING like LSD. Media and politicians often compare these two, while nothing - nor the mechanism of action, nor the effects are alike (!). LSD works on 5-HT receptors (seratonin system), acting as an agonist and as an antagonist depending on the placement of the receptor in the brain, while Salvinorin-A (active compound of salvia divinorum) acts on kappa-opioid receptors. As having tried both of these substances, I can assure you - THAY ARE NOT EVEN SIMILAR!
Jumping right in with S. Divinorum without prior entheogenic experience is downright juvenile. It’s not exactly every day recreation. As for the nutmeg bit; it’s true. The dosage required to get enough mrysticin into your system is taxing. Although, if you’re interested, I have an excellent recipe for making it quite palatable.
Salvia is pretty dangerous. People are apt to have wander about while they are under the influence, and often have little or no awareness of their surroundings. Check Erowid.

I know this. With never having using salvia myself, I am rather limited in how I can describe it, and it just happened to be the closest thing I could compare it to. You may have noticed that I mentioned that only 18% of the people who have used salvia actually compared its effects to LSD.
And here I’ve been having so much fun adding nutmeg to my cappuccino every morning
Thanks for visiting my blog! I’ll be back…
i suggest you try one of the classic psychedelic first (mushrooms, lsd or mescaline) as i think one of those will be far more safer and enjoyable for a first trip.
when you have some experience with them, you can progress to dmt, “the ultimate psychdelic”.
search for “shamans of the amazon” on video.google.com and “joe rogan explains dmt”
Theres plenty of information about salvia and other drugs around, check out the www.lycaeum.org and eroid before going any further.
Also Salvia can do nothing or be pretty hardcore and it’s best to do it in darkness without music with a sitter in case you get up and walk around.
As for the person who said you can’t remember what happened thats only at the top dose; here are the different levels of salvia from the wikipedia article:
* S - Level One — “Subtle” effects of Salvia in small doses
o Perception that “something” is happening, with no explanation
o Relaxation
o Meditative feelings and heightened sexual sensations
* A: Level Two — “Altered” perception
o Enhanced colors and textures
o Changed space and depth perception
o Dream-like experience, “eye candy” hallucinations with closed eyes
o Awareness of distinction between fleeting visual effects and reality
* L: Level Three — “Light” visionary state
o Clear images with fractal and geometric patterns with eyes closed
o Two-dimensional imagery with eyes closed
o Vague images or dream-like “eye candy” hallucinations, without confusion with reality
* V: Level Four — “Vivid” reaction
o Impression of a complete, dream-like state of alternate reality with eyes closed
o Complex, three-dimensional images with eyes closed
o Hearing of voices
o Knowledge of reality with eyes open
o “Shaman” level; journeys to foreign lands, encounters with spiritual beings, feelings of becoming another person
* I: Level Five — “Immaterial” existence with consciousness severely affected
o Lack of individuality; universal consciousness merges with other objects, real or imagined
o Lucid thought processes; movement coupled with confusion
o Extreme pleasure or fear felt by the experimenter
o “Sitter” level; need for someone else present who watches and ensures an injury-free, reassuring experience for the disoriented person
o Absence of reality; wrapped in an inner experience
* A: Level Six — “Amnesic (amnesia-like effects)” — the most extreme
o Loss of consciousness; no memory of experience afterwards
o Falling down; thrashing about
o No perception or recollection of pain or newly acquired injuries
o Deep trance-like state not often sought, since no memory remains after the experience
o No recollection and loss of all control, thus discouraged by most sources
Salvia was a pretty fun experience for me. it was the first time I got high.
Fucking carpet ate me. There was no carpet in the room.
Meh. I put a synthetic designer mescaline up my nose twenty something years ago and ruined recreational drug use for myself forever. Now everything gives me the jimm-jamms. Everything that happens to you changes you forever.
Whoa. Deep.

the title of the post suggests otherwise.
I have enjoyed salvia a lot. To me, sorry, but it is a lot like LSD, but then again the experience may indeed be specific to the user. I noticed time warps and heavy illusions, hallucinations, hearing voices, I can’t figure out why the “brain” police have not made this stuff illegal. I’m glad it’s not. I like it because I seem to end up in a living dream and communicate with the TV, you feel the “emotion” on the tube. Very strange stuff. It does seem to work on neurological pain, which is why I tried it in the first place, and it also seems to benefit my depression. It’s far too expensive, though, I paid $45.00 for a 20X gram in a small vial at a place in down town Winnipeg. I’ve mostly done it alone, but I was OK. I only fell down once!! More because I’m a klutz!!
Does anyone know how I can get it cheaper or where I can get an actual “plant?”
I loved it. Great New Fad for ‘07
-ME-
Salvia is a very weird drug. I’ve heard crazy stories from friends (immediately after they had come down in some cases), and have had weird (though not as intense and visual as they have described) feelings from smoking a limited enough amount of it. I didn’t really like it, and most people i’ve met didn’t really like it.
It also should not in any circumstances be taken by anyone who is new to entheogenic drugs, or even drugs in general. I had taken pscilocybin mushrooms, lsd, mdma countless times and was a long time hardened smoker when i took salvia. I still found it uncomfortable in a very weird way. Far different to uncomfortable feelings i’ve experienced on LSD or Mushrooms. Not so much uncomfortable thoughts (i’ve never had uncomfortable visuals on lsd or mushrooms, only thoughts), as a feeling of discomfort in existing, which annoyed and bothered me. I feel that someone without adequate experience of entheogens could misinterpret these feelings as truth and take their own life or something equally horrible.
Mushrooms are illegal now in my country because a businessman jumped out a window. Something tells me he realised his life was based around money, a completely worthless idea when in a deep trip.
Next on the list for me will be DMT. Or preferably ayhausca, in the amazon…with the shaman…
Anyway, if you’re looking for a similar experience to lsd, the nearest thing i’ve taken legally would be Morning glory seeds. They sell them in bags of 6 here, and i assume that’s probably supposed to be a hit, but i have heard 12 is a good time of them would be enough. They can be harsh on the stomach though, and often commercial seeds have mercury on them. Head shop by me sells clean ones.
At the end of the day i would say Mushrooms though. I’ve experienced LSD many times, and the LSD that is currently being sold near me is an estimated 700-900 mic trip…very strong. However the pscilocybin experience to me has always felt more beautiful, more whole and more natural. Perhaps this is linked with the use of mushrooms by early hominids, but who knows?
Oh and as for the argument that smoking marijuana lowers your IQ (as stated above), you may have had mental disturbance for a day or two after it possibly, but it has no affect on your IQ. I have the same measured IQ today as i did when i started smoking dope 7 years ago. The thing about Marijuana is it affects your concentration (especially if you don’t smoke much), and affects your motivation. As Bill Hicks said: “When you’re high you can do anything you normally do…you just realize it’s not worth the effort.
I think that my experiences with drugs have certainly turned me against the idea of a career life, working in a large IT corporation. This doesn’t mean i have ceased my studies, I just know that i would prefer to spend my life studying consciousness, the world, entheogenic plants XD and heaps of other interesting stuff that have the capacity of returning me to the source.
