Americans more likely than Muslims to support attacks on civilians

According to a recent poll done by the University of Maryland, Americans are more likely to support attacks against civilians than citizens of every other Muslim country except Nigeria. This poll challenges the popular belief that Islam is a religion of war and the United States is a nation of peace.

Percentage of population agreeing that “bombing and other attacks intentionally aimed at civilians” are “never justified:”

Pakistan: 86%
Bangladesh: 81%
Indonesia: 74%
United States: 46%

WASHINGTON - Those who think that Muslim countries and pro-terrorist attitudes go hand-in-hand might be shocked by new polling research: Americans are more approving of terrorist attacks against civilians than any major Muslim country except for Nigeria.

The survey, conducted in December 2006 by the University of Maryland’s prestigious Program on International Public Attitudes, shows that only 46 percent of Americans think that “bombing and other attacks intentionally aimed at civilians” are “never justified,” while 24 percent believe these attacks are “often or sometimes justified.”

Contrast those numbers with 2006 polling results from the world’s most-populous Muslim countries – Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. Terror Free Tomorrow, the organization I lead, found that 74 percent of respondents in Indonesia agreed that terrorist attacks are “never justified”; in Pakistan, that figure was 86 percent; in Bangladesh, 81 percent.

    Unbelievable.

I wonder how many of those Americans are aware of the fact that intentionally targeting civilians is a war crime proscribed by the Geneva Conventions.

I agree wholeheartedly with the point, however, the way the question is worded negates the intention. People will easy surmise that any ‘foreigner’ hearing that question will misunderstand it, the way it starts with a positive assertion, and ends with a negative one, could confuse people. This is just too important of a perspective reference point that it exposes to people their own paradigms, which is something very easily justified by finding the simplest way out of logic that may contain wholes.

Could it that Americans think that way is because of what they had to do to defeat the Germans and Japanese in WW2, and concept of MAD during the cold war. Just a thought.

America did not have to use the bomb to defeat Japan btw. They were already retreating in the Pacific. It was a show of force to let the world know who was calling the shots post-war.

Next time a suicide bomber takes out a street side cafe in Israel

Or some other country decides to raise havoc on another.

Who does the world look to??????

About Japan they picked the fight, we ended it saving over 500,000 additional USA lives in the process, were they after peaceful coexistence, there purpose was to control the world

When the terrorists blowup a resort, dial 911 and see who answers.

I don’t see your people out on the front lines

The new bully on the block is Iran, North Korea. They have money to build war machines while there countries starve. So let’s sit back and throw stones at those who are willing to come forth and stand for freedom for all.

Then the world opinion says we can’t chase them into the hiding places, and destroy them…

We must grant them a sanctuary from which they can rain there terror on all.

This world has its value system all messed up, there are woman and children starving in many of the countries throughout the world while there leaders plunder there national wealth to bring down this nation.

There will come a time when only two nations will stand for the rights of man, the U.S.A. & Israel, Read your Bible, Koran, & Torah. It is all spelled out there

I guess the Americans who come on here to comment and rationalize bombing civilians don’t get the irony.

  12. 12 dudeasincool Jul 1st, 2007 at 7:15 pm

I find the poll hard to believe, Paul–so guess again. I’m an American and have never met anyone that supports that point of view. Anyone who does, is unAmerican in my opinion.
